Brian, the inventor

Brian loves transforming ideas into reality. That’s why the training as mechanical engineer at VIA Univesity College in Horsens was an obvious choice.

Brian Hulgren Olsen is an inventor through and though. When he sees a problem, he gets an idea and works intensely to bring it to life. For instance, he once got an idea to deaden the noise from the garbage bins in his backyard.

“When I started studying, I moved into a new apartment. As in so many other places, there were a number of garbage containers in the back yard. I quickly grew tired of the noise from the lid when it was shut. So I set out to find a solution, but it was never carried out.”

But others of Brian’s ideas have been realised. As a part of their training to become mechanical engineers, the students are continually confronted with concrete problems. During their third semester, Brian and his project group faced the challenge to develop a solution for Nissens A/S in Horsens. Among other things, this company produces oil coolers, and a part of this process is done manually. At Nissens A/S, they want to change this, and Brian and his fellow students were assigned this task.

“We examined and recorded the entire work process. With our examination as a point of departure, we developed an automatic process, which Nissens A/S later implemented,” says Brian, and continues:

“Basically, this is how all our projects work. We are always in contact with a company with a concrete problem. It’s an exciting and challenging way to study. And it helps make theory tangible.”

At the moment, Brian works with his final project, which is due in June. When Brian graduates, he will start working at Bilwinco, a company located in Skanderborg, where he has already secured a job.

Facts: Brian’s road to the mechanical engineering programme Brian finished his training as a machine operator in 2002. One year later, he started his training as a production technologist, which finished two years, and then went on to the mechanical engineer programme, which he is about to finish now, two and a half years later.
